Scottsdale Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, and entrepreneurial performing arts professional to lead its division of Performing Arts.Scottsdale Arts manages the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in its contract with the City of Scottsdale.The Director of Performing Arts will be responsible for programming the Center’s 850-seat “Virginia G. Piper Theater” and its 130-seat “Stage Two” theater, along with other regional venues as part of the organization’s current strategic plan.The Director works closely with all members of the Senior Management Team, including Education, Marketing, and Development, and collaborates on programming strategies with Scottsdale Arts directors for its other two divisions, Public Art and Contemporary Art.
This position is responsible for the creation and implementation of a performing arts programming plan that is market-driven, builds diverse audiences for various genres of presentations, as well as strengthens our ties to the community we serve. The Director will serve as a respected manager/mentor who will inspire the team and lead through example. The Director serves on the Senior Management Team and reports to the President & CEO, working collaboratively with all division and department directors. The Director will also make regular presentations to the Scottsdale Arts Board of Trustees and the Performing Arts Center’s Advisory Board – as well as represents Scottsdale Arts in the local, national and international arts community.
The Director of Performing Arts will utilize the skills and abilities of the team and external stakeholders to further our mission to develop, advance and deliver world-class arts and cultural experiences and opportunities. Knowledge and abilities needed to be successful in this position:
- Proven track record in strategic programming, including: Broadway, Jazz, Dance, Pop, Classical and World music
- Experience in growth of attendance/revenues, development initiatives, branding and budget creation/projections
- Proven track record of meeting department/organizational operating and financial goals
- Exceptional communication skills, with particular emphasis on interaction with both 1:1 and group settings
- Excellent organizational abilities with a strong initiative-driven method of work production
- Proven capability of working with database-driven information; Tessitura knowledge extremely helpful
- Extensive network and relationships with artist managers, agents and leaders in the performing arts field
- Ability to negotiate favorable artist contracts
- Knowledge, passion and desire to work in support of performing arts and education programs
This position requires a bachelor’s degree, preferably in the arts, along with eight to 10 years of arts experience which includes progressively increasing responsibility and oversight of a department. A minimum of three years of that experience must include active supervision and leading of others to reach departmental goals. The ability to work flexible hours is required. A passion for the arts combined with experience in programming all areas of the performing arts, primarily with impacting ticket sales and audience growth, are critical for success in this position.
