ORGANIZATION:  UCSB Art & Lectures is one of the premier University-based performing arts programs in the U.S. and a driving force in the national performing arts scene. The program is lauded for its excellence in presenting world-renowned artists and musicians, public intellectuals, and Nobel Prize winners. Arts & Lectures presents over 150 public performances, lectures and film screenings each year to the Santa Barbara community. It is the largest arts presenting organization between Los Angeles and San Francisco, drawing over 75,000 patrons annually. In addition to its presenting program, Arts & Lectures commissions new works and produces an extensive education outreach program and community partnerships serving more than 30,000 community members with free concerts, lectures, a summer outdoor film series and arts engagement opportunities for all ages. Through A&L’s robust education and outreach programs, visiting artists and lecturers engage in residencies and master classes, visit classrooms for lively discussions, inspire critical thinking, and spark dialogue across the campus’s 45 academic and non-academic departments, in K-12 schools and community outreach programs.  

POSITION OVERVIEW:  Reporting to the Associate Director of Arts & Lectures, the Director of Marketing & Communications is responsible for developing and implementing dynamic marketing strategies and campaigns for the Arts & Lectures program as a whole and for its individual performances, films, lectures and special events. This role envisions and develops strategic communications and collateral that target donor prospects and promote philanthropy alongside the Senior Director of Development. The position oversees comprehensive marketing strategies; the design and creation of all publications, publicity, advertising and promotions; digital presence, including social media, relevance and sales channels for the program. The Director is responsible for revenue generation in excess of $3 million annually through ticket sales, ad sales and sponsorships.

The Director of Marketing & Communications is a key member of the Arts & Lectures senior management team. This position manages a staff of six, including a Senior Artist, Senior Writer/Publicist and Marketing Manager.

REQUIREMENTS:  Ten plus years of significant demonstrated success in marketing and communications in a presenting arts organization or equivalent. Seven years of progressively responsible management experience. Commitment and ability to articulate the case for higher education, UCSB and the arts. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. Experience in working closely with Development to support fundraising efforts is preferred. Proven track record of driving significant earned income.
