Production Manager, Tacoma Arts Live

Tacoma Arts Live is looking for a Production Manager to have responsibility for the operations of locally produced shows in the Theater on the Square facility in the Tacoma Theater District, which includes four Equity shows per year plus support for two shows for the School of the Arts and Tacoma Arts Live Education Program. Will be responsible for communication, internal/external interface, contracts, tracking budgets, planning, schedules, lighting, sound, and set design / construction. This is a full time, exempt position, $40k-50k per year, DOE. We honor and value the dignity of all individuals, and invite all qualified individuals to apply.


  • Secures the rights to present the play from the royalty house or publisher-agent. Obtain scripts as required and maintain check in/out process, for all potential and licensed plays.
  • Supports the forming of a production team and schedules production meetings.
  • Creates contracts and obtains signatures with Contractors
  • Supports on-boarding and paper work for part time Artist employees.
  • Sets the rehearsal venue and schedules rehearsals and performances utilizing the organization’s event management software, and in coordination with each play director.
  • Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
  • Advises stage managers, production managers, lighting and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and collaborates on the implementation of approved technical designs.
  • Monitors, operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of Theater on the Square, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and coordinating the use and maintenance of stage facilities, with Tacoma Arts Live IATSE #15 unit, Maintenance team and Vendots
  • Coordinates the design and construction of sets, utilizing stage crew or outside vendors, Students or Volunteers as appropriate.
  • Supports, collaborates and coordinates with internal teams on the design of lighting and sound systems appropriate to each performance.
  • Assists in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows.
  • Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies within budget parameters.
  • Develops and maintains inventory of stock scenery.
  • Identifies areas for process consistency that will lead to cost savings.
  • Develops a production schedule template that can be used for all shows.
  • Attends technical rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting the show.
  • Works with marketing to provide all pertinent production information for Playbill printing.
  • Serves as liaison to crew, actors, directors and internal Tacoma Arts Live departments to facilitate resolution of all production needs and issues.
  • Helps to facilitate photo shoots, publicity events and B-roll shoots.
  • Tracks work hours charged to production and reconciles to budget.
  • Maintains irregular and extended hours as necessary.
  • Attends weekly event team meetings to ensure efficient and complete event preparation.
  • Serve as stage manager, as needed.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director of Operations or theater leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment or process improvements.
  • Additional duties as assigned.


  • Previous theater experience required, with an emphasis in show production.
  • Working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theater, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various performances.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills – detail oriented. Ability to multi-task and respond to changes in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Knowledge of working with union crews and requirements of union contracts.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Skilled in the use of Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to plan, organize and work independently with minimal direction.
  • Experience with event management software is desirable.
