Webinar: Working In A Polarized Community

Generously sponsored by Seattle Theatre Group

CONTENT WARNING: This session includes reference to threats of politically motivated violence, including sexual assault, death, and stalking.

We live in a time of great polarization and political tension. Free speech, racial justice, health and well-being, climate change, gun control, religion, and tribalism often trigger division and threaten social cohesion. How do we, as arts leaders — artists, agents, and presenters — navigate these treacherous waters? How do we prepare communities to see/hear work outside their own experience? How do we navigate crises when they happen? When is it appropriate to push? To pull back? Join our expert panel as they grapple with the social dynamics, both hidden and surfaced, that tear community apart and those of the future that may one day help knit us back together.

The panel:

  • Camille Barigar (she/her) | Director of Community Enrichment, Arts on Tour/College of Southern Idaho

  • Dr. Theresa Martinez, PhD (she/her) | Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Utah

  • Dr. Iquail Shaheed, PhD (he/him) | Executive Artistic Director, DANCE IQUAIL!

  • Moderated by Antonio Gómez (he/him) | Director of Community Engagement & Extended Learning, Tacoma Arts Live; Vice President, WAA Board of Directors

This panel aired during the 2022 Western Arts Alliance Annual Conference
